Zero Waste Pattern Cutting Course

Do you hate having loads of fabric left over and wonder what you’re ever going to do with it? Are you interested to see how sewing and sustainability can work in harmony together? Well this course is just for you!

During this 10 week course we will be learning the art of zero waste pattern cutting. The course is accompanied by the ‘Zero Waste Patterns’ book by Birgitta Helmersson. Birgitta is a Swedish-Australian designer and pattern maker. Everyone who attends the course will get their very own copy of Birgitta’s fascinating, informative book to keep.

This is a modern approach to sustainable sewing. Zero waste pattern cutting is a bit like a puzzle. Using a pre-determined length of fabric, you strategically plan your pattern pieces so that everything is used, then draw your pattern straight on to your fabric so no need for reams and reams of paper patterns. The book includes a scandi-style collection of 20 garments.

During the course we will be making the 5 simple zero waste blocks, a t-shirt, skirt, tank top, shirt and trousers. These 5 blocks are the basis for all the other garments in the book. The size range is UK 6 – 30. There will also be the opportunity to learn some core dressmaking skills too. This course includes:

  • Zero waste patterns created to your own body measurements
  • Adjustments for a better fit
  • How to cut your fabric
  • Sewing hems and seams
  • Sewing darts and pleats
  • Sewing buttons and buttonholes
  • Elastic insertion
  • How to gather fabric
  • How to use bias binding
  • and so much more!

This course is suitable for beginners, however you will need to know how to use a sewing machine, if you need to learn then you could sign up for the Absolute Beginners Sewing Class first.

‘Zero Waste Patterns’ book, use of all equipment, and as much tea and coffee as you can drink are all included in the cost. You will need to provide your own fabric and thread. More details will be emailed to you once you have booked your place.
